Volume VIII is concerned
with the materials-handling aspects of gas cleaning.
It examines two principal areas: the control of
dusts at source and their subsequent discharge
and disposal from gas cleaning equipment. Once
a dusty gas has been entrained into a duct then
a range of equipment is available which can provide
an effective separation. However, the subject
of how to control emissions which are not readily
ducted has received much less attention. This
report therefore provides an evaluation of the
means available for the assessment of the tendency
of a material to evolve dust, an examination of
control principles which aim to prevent emissions
by better overall system design, and a review
of available design methods for local exhaust
systems. In addition, the report examines the
procedures used for the discharge and the disposal
of the collected dust which, because of its fineness,
can sometimes present severe materials-handling
